OBITUARY
Bishop Henry L. Smalls was a native of Sheldon_, South Carolina and the third child born to the late Robert and Early Bell Smalls. At the tender age of 12 years old, he began his spiritual journey for Christ and was baptized at the Cannan Baptist Church in Sheldon, South Carolina. Bishop Smalls graduated from Robert Small High School with honors in 1961. After graduating, Bishop Smalls moved to New York City and joined the Second Cannan Baptist Church in 1963 under the Pastorate of the late, Rev. Dr. John P. Ladson. Bishop Smalls was joined in Holy matrimony with Lou A. Bowers on June 12, 1965.
Bishop Smalls was called in a vision by the Lord to preach in 1975 and was licensed on July 25, 1976 and ordained on November 2, 1978 by the late, Rev. Dr. John P. Ladson. Bishop Smalls served as the Youth pastor for 6 ½ years and an associate minister at the Second Cannan Baptist Church. Upon the passing of the late Rev. Dr. John P. Ladson, Bishop Smalls was unanimously elected to serve as the Senior Pastor of the Second Cannan Baptist Church for 7 years before being shown in a vision to organize his own Church.
Bishop Smalls organized the Gospel Missionary Baptist Church on Sunday December 1. 1991. The gospel Missionary Baptist Church was commissioned by Rev. Dr. James Wilson, Pastor, First Union Baptist Church. Through Bishop Smalls' commitment to serving God and ministering to his congregation, God Blessed The Gospel Missionary Baptist Church to build a brand new Church with an eleven story condominium building over the Church that was completed in April, 2007.
Bishop Smalls' education was fruitful and Blessed. He graduated from the Manhattan Bible Institute of New York 1980, and in I 982 he received his Master's Degree in Divinity. Bishop Smalls earned his Doctor of Divinity Degree from the Hugee Theological Institute ofNew York in 2001. On Sunday, June 29, 2008, Pastor Smalls was "Consecrated" as Bishop. Since then, Bishop Smalls continued to do God's work in his Church, as a Chaplain, in his community and abroad. He displayed the characters of a dedicated and outstanding leader!
Bishop Smalls served as United States Chaplain for over 34 years and was the Director of the United Chaplain International World Outreach, INC. of New York State. Bishop Smalls also organized the Empire International Chaplain Association, INC. of New York in 2005 and served as the President until his passing. The E.I.C.A. INC. has almost 80 Chaplains that served the state ofNew York and surrounding areas today.
Bishop Smalls was a beloved husband, father, grand and great grandfather, and an outstanding Pastor who was well respected by his family, congregation and peers. Three of Bishop Smalls closest peers were Rev. Dr. Weldon Mc Williams, Rev. Dr. James Wilson and Rev. Dr. Booker T. Sears who remained some Powerful, Praying Pastors until the end of Bishops' time. Bishop Smalls was a TRUE VALOR for God advancing in his Healing Ministry and always working on his Mission to serving the Lord Jesus Christ!
Bishop Smalls was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Early Bell Smalls. Bishop Smalls leaves to cherish his memory, a beloved and devoted wife of fifty-three years, Mrs. Lou A. Sm'. Is; three sons, Ronald Small (Chiquita)- Waynesville, Missouri; William Bowers- St. Louis, Missouri; Rev. Robert Washington (Ronda)- Beaufort, South Carolina; three daughters, Sedetra Jenkins (Dennis)- Hackensack, New Jersey; Kimberly Karalia (John)- Hackensack, New Jersey; Chyron Smalls- Englewood, New Jersey; four granddaughters, Joye, Jennifer, Ja'nae, and Jada; seven great grandchildren; one sister, Janet Hopkins- Sheldon, South Carolina; four brothers, Rev. Robert Smalls(Mary)- Seabrook, South Carolina; Rev Joseph Smalls
(Minnie)- Sheldon, South Carolina; Nathaniel Smalls- Sheldon, South Carolina; Anthony Smalls Charleston, South Carolina; four sisters-in-law, Shirley Foster(Jesse)- St Louis, Missouri; Eva Poole- Gills Ville, Georgia; Kathy Patterson- Charlotte, North Carolina; Dr Mary Alexander
(Joseph)- Silver Springs, Maryland; five brothers-in-law, Ernest Bowers (Patricia)- Queens, New York; Thurmond Bowers (Deborah)- Green Pond, South Carolina; Donald Bowers- Green Pond, South Carolina; Kenneth Bowers (Lavern)- Guyton, Georgia; Charles Bowers- Green Pond, South Carolina; one aunt, Rebecca Tell- New York; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; along with college of special and dear friends and colleagues; in addition to The Gospel Baptist Church in its entirety.
